The Story of an Activities Coordinator
Meet Debbie Armstrong, our dedicated Activities Coordinator who is based at one of Bupa’s eleven residential villages.
With a passion for creating engaging and inclusive activities, Debbie brings a wealth of experience in organising events that cater to diverse interests and abilities. Her innovative approach and enthusiasm for fostering community spirit have propelled her from Housekeeping Assistant to Activities Coordinator within just two years of joining Bupa.
A Place to Belong
Debbie's decision to join Bupa was driven by her immediate connection with Richmond Villages. "I absolutely fell in love with the place when I walked through the door," she recalls. The friendly team, lovely residents, and Bupa's strong ethos of caring for both residents and staff made her feel right at home.
A Day in the Life
Debbie's day starts with meticulous planning and preparation for the activities ahead. Whether it's organising a trip, setting up for an afternoon of entertainment, or delivering activities on the Care floor, her role requires a high level of organisation and creativity. From creative crafts and gardening to exercise sessions, quizzes, and singing, Debbie ensures there's something for everyone. When not delivering activities, she sources new ideas and materials, ensuring a varied and engaging schedule for all residents. "My day always goes extremely fast, as I always have something to do," she shared. Her dedication to encouraging residents to try new things and assisting them in activities they love is truly inspiring.
Passion for People
For Debbie, the highlight of her day is making people smile. "I make it my mission to spread happiness," she says. The connections she makes with residents, the laughter, and the smiles are what motivate her to come to work every day. "If I can make a connection with someone and cheer them up, or make them laugh or smile, that means the world to me."
Life Beyond Work
Outside of work, Debbie enjoys spending time with her pets – an eight-year-old Husky named Blue, a Leopard Gecko called Gizmo, and a beautiful African Grey Parrot named Storm. Her love for animals and her adventurous spirit, including holding a full motorbike license, add a unique dimension to her vibrant personality.
A look to the future
Debbie is committed to her professional development. She has completed courses in Medication in Health and Social Care, First Aid, Moving & Handling, and First Aid for Mental Health. She is now embarking on a Leadership Training course, fully supported by her manager. Bupa encourages all our people to reach their potential and pursue continuous learning.
A Place to Thrive
Debbie embodies Bupa's values of being brave, caring, and responsible. Her dedication to making a difference in residents' lives, her commitment to continuous learning, and her efforts to create a positive and engaging work environment make her a true asset to our team.
