Oliver
The Story of a Placement Student

Starting a career is a thrilling adventure filled with opportunities for growth and learning. Oliver is ready to tackle real-world challenges while contributing to impactful projects. “I was first drawn to Bupa by the fact it is a huge global company with an incredible reputation” he shares. The rotational aspect of the placement programme was particularly appealing to him as it allowed him to explore various roles while deciding on his career path.

Making Health Happen

In his role with the Sustainable Finance team, Oliver is at the forefront of helping Bupa deliver healthcare sustainably. His work ensures that Bupa can continue to achieve fantastic health outcomes while reducing environmental impact.

Oliver’s mornings typically start around 8:30am involving team meetings and working on various tasks, from spreadsheets to reports. “I like to go into the office a lot so that I can speak face-to-face and meet new people around the building,” he says. Lunchtime is a highlight, often spent socialising with fellow Placements and Graduates over a game of table football. The afternoons are a mix of continuing tasks and supporting his team, wrapping up around 5pm.

Bupa’s clear purpose of helping people live healthier lives is a major motivator for Oliver. "Customer outcomes are the ultimate focus of the business. It's exciting to contribute to that goal," he notes. The supportive and friendly work culture at Bupa also plays a significant role in his motivation. “I always know where and how to ask for help and never feel overstressed from my work” he adds.

Oliver is still exploring his career path in finance, and Bupa’s rotational programmes are perfect for this. "I don't know what finance career I want. So, Bupa is helping by letting me do two 6-month rotations during my placement year. Then, I might do three 12-month rotations if I get into the graduate programme," he explains. The chance to study towards an Associate Chartered Accountant qualification is another exciting prospect for him.

Advice to Students

Oliver’s advice to anyone considering a placement or graduate scheme at Bupa is to go for it. “A year ago, I was nervous about the transition from university to work. But after a few weeks at Bupa, I felt settled in the work environment,” he recalls. The comprehensive inductions and supportive community make the transition smooth and straightforward.
