Adapting to Thrive

During my three years working in a mental health role at Bupa, I was diagnosed with restless leg syndrome, and to manage the pain I had to spend time pacing up and down. When I moved teams the pain increased and I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Unfortunately, the tools I had used previously to manage my pain hardly worked.

I knew government support would be a lengthy process, so the thought of doing this really put me off from even trying. I spoke with my manager who directed me to our Diversity Inclusion Manager who was a massive support and shared that Bupa could actually support me with this.

Within six weeks, Bupa arranged for an assessment. The results identified the necessary adjustments and equipment, all of which were promptly approved and supplied by Bupa. I received everything I needed, and now I have a safe and effective workplace at home. Bupa was able to claim the costs of my equipment using my workplace reference number provided by the government.

Had I waited to hear back from the government workplace department, I would have had to wait an additional eight months. Had this been the case, I honestly don’t think I could have continued working, but as it stands, Bupa offered me a smooth transition, providing not just physical but also emotional support. Bupa is not only creating a culture where everyone can thrive but is also setting the standards for other companies.
