Esther

Meet Esther, our vibrant Actuarial Placement Student at Bupa, who was stationed at the heart of the bustling city of Manchester.

With a keen eye for detail and a passion for numbers, Esther was deeply involved in the intricate world of pricing corporate health schemes. Her journey into the actuarial sphere had been a unique one, stemming from a background in medicine (up until A levels), but with a growing interest in the power of mathematics. “Choosing Bupa's placement program was a strategic move for me, as I had developed a preference for math. I could now put this into practice in a job”.  

Starting her Bupa journey last September for the year, Esther was an indispensable part of the team, navigating the complexities of pricing for new business and renewals, a task that requires her to engage with a diverse array of teams, from account managers to the pricing development departments. “My role has strengthened my skills and deepened my understanding of health insurance pricing”.

A typical day involved meticulous tracking of the business inbox, ensuring that every task was managed with precision and care, a trait that sets her apart in her role.

While at the University of Leicester, where she's pursuing a degree in Mathematical and Actuarial Science, Esther not only excelled academically but has also made her mark as a Mathematics and Actuarial Science ambassador (during second year). Her passion for teaching shines through as she tutors her peers online (just during second year), a testament to her commitment to sharing knowledge and fostering a community of learning.

The scheme had allowed Esther to experience an array of roles across Bupa and the teams, putting her in positions where she was able to meet people across the business. “Shadowing (Having the chance to speak to) seasoned professionals opened my eyes to diverse career prospects.”

Beyond her role, Esther's love for music shines through, as she harmonises with her church's worship team and showcases her instrumental prowess. “I play the violin, piano, and guitar. I enjoy creating music with fellow musicians.”

Also, an ardent lover of the "The Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings" series (of which she can recite lines by heart), you might find her exploring the outdoors, rain, or shine, “This is my go-to wind-down activity”, where she often accompanied with music that helps her disconnect and rejuvenate.

“While hybrid work allows flexibility, team gatherings foster a relaxed and enjoyable work atmosphere.” Bupa’s welcoming office environment and flexible working options had further enhanced her work experience. Where she prepares for a promising future in the actuarial field, “I'm grateful for the opportunities and community spirit that Bupa fosters and its an ideal place for aspiring professionals.”
