Martyn Zajma

As an individual who not only navigated the challenges but thrived within them, Martyn shares invaluable insights derived from his personal experiences starting as a Finance and Governance Placement Student with us at Bupa.

Below Martyn shares their wisdom on recognising opportunities beyond the conventional, engaging with company culture, and maintaining a delicate equilibrium for personal and professional growth for those also about to embark on their own industry placement adventure.

Recognising Pressure

The initial weeks can be intense, with external and internal pressures. Acknowledging these fears is crucial, as many have faced similar challenges. Reframing pressures as tasks to overcome collectively can lead to coping strategies like mindfulness or joining supportive work groups. Remember, your placement is both a job and a learning experience, offering opportunities for growth beyond your comfort zone.

Recognising Opportunities

While administrators may provide additional roles, true company insight often comes from initiatives outside your team and scheme. Engaging in outreach programs and actively participating in presentations, talks, and workshops can be transformative. Take note of speakers and their contacts; they can become valuable mentors and open doors to unexpected opportunities. Be proactive in expressing your interest and seize these chances, even if initially apprehensive.

Recognising Balance

Embrace challenges, push boundaries, but know when to protect your energy. Your industry placement is a platform for learning, contributing, and building lasting memories. It's not just a job; it's an opportunity for personal and professional growth. Explore beyond initial expectations and find ways to combat burn-out, ensuring your professional journey becomes a truly enriching story that only you can craft.
