Breaking the Mould: Redefining Masculinity in the Workplace

At Bupa, we believe everyone should feel empowered to bring their whole selves to work and that includes supporting our men to redefine what masculinity looks like in today's workplace.

For International Men's Day, we’re shining a light on the stories of men across Bupa who are breaking the mould. Whether they’re challenging stereotypes in traditionally female-dominated roles or simply showing that strength can mean asking for help. Their experiences reflect a workplace culture where authenticity is not just accepted, but celebrated.

Dental Nurse, James
“Dentistry isn’t just about smiles — it’s about confidence, care, and trust.”

James shares why he chose a career that challenges expectations and how he’s redefining masculinity in healthcare.
“I’ve always been drawn to roles that make a real difference in people’s lives. When someone walks into the surgery anxious and leaves feeling relaxed, that’s when you know you’ve done something meaningful. People are sometimes surprised to see a man in this job, but I take that as motivation. Standing out isn’t a weakness; it’s a reminder that I’m breaking the mould. Empathy and care aren’t tied to gender, they’re part of being human.”
Working in a female-majority environment has shaped James both professionally and personally:
“It’s taught me teamwork, compassion, and emotional strength. I’ve learned to balance being kind but firm, focused but understanding. It’s opened conversations about mental health and resilience that matter.”
For James, authenticity is key:
''At Bupa, individuality is encouraged. I feel comfortable being myself, which helps me connect with patients and colleagues.”
His advice to other men considering a dental nursing and other care-focused roles:
“Go for it and go in with pride. The skills you gain such as patience, communication, adaptability, emotional resilience, will serve you everywhere. Look after yourself as much as you look after others, and you’ll thrive, while helping shift perceptions of care-focused careers for men.”

Wellbeing Health Advisor, Yusuf
“Times have changed — and so has the way we define strength and success at work.”

Yusuf shares how working in wellbeing and benefits was a natural progression.
‘’I’ve always been in roles where I provide a service and look after people. For me, I make sure I give myself time to shut off and do something I enjoy.
Flexible working and Bupa networks like Men’s Health have made a big difference to his life and career:
“Working from home means I can be around my children more and I don’t feel like I’m missing important moments. The Men's Wellbeing network also showed me there are more people who think like me.”

Registered Nurse & Clinical Deputy Manager, Kennedy
“Choosing nursing was deeply personal for me — it’s about honouring my heritage while breaking barriers.”

Inspired by his grandmother, a natural healer, Kennedy learned early on the value of caring for others and following his passions.
“Seeing her impact on our community sparked my love for people and the desire to bring comfort and smiles to those in need.”
Breaking cultural expectations wasn’t easy:
“In Nigerian culture, certain jobs were seen as either for men or women. It took courage and family support to pursue my calling. My journey has been about honouring my heritage while breaking barriers.”
His experience across hospitals and care homes shaped his leadership:
“Teamwork is more than collaboration — it’s valuing every contribution. Empathy is at the heart of nursing, and listening deeply to patients and families has made me a better caregiver and leader.”
Kennedy’s advice to men considering nursing:
“Go for it. Nursing is about compassion, skill, and making a difference — qualities that aren’t defined by gender. Don’t let stereotypes hold you back. Your perspective matters. Embrace the chance to challenge norms and redefine what it means to be a caregiver.”

Registered Nurse, Elliot
“Nursing isn’t just a job — it’s a privilege.”

For another Bupa nurse, the most rewarding part of the role is simple:
“Getting to know the residents I care for. They’re not a diagnosis or a room number — they’re people with history, stories, and values. Building those connections and being part of their lives in such a meaningful way is something I genuinely treasure.”
He also addresses one of the biggest misconceptions:
“The question I get asked most often is, ‘Why didn’t you become a doctor?’ Once I explain how nursing gives us the time and space to build deep relationships and support people beyond their medical condition, they understand. And many are surprised to hear that perspective coming from a man.”
Being a man in nursing has shaped his experience:
“There are times when residents prefer a female nurse for certain aspects of personal care which I completely respect and understand. It’s about their comfort and dignity — and that always comes first. My female colleagues have helped me navigate this without taking it personally. We work as a team and make sure every resident feels safe.”

At Bupa, we’re proud to support men in all roles, at all levels, to be their authentic selves. Whether it’s through mental health support or inclusive networks such as our Men’s Wellbeing Network, we’re committed to building a culture where everyone can thrive and speak openly.

Because breaking the mould isn’t just brave — it’s necessary.
