Menopause Awareness Month

Supporting Menopause in the Workplace at Bupa

Menopause is a significant life stage that can impact people both personally and professionally. At Bupa, we believe workplaces play a vital role in creating supportive environments where everyone feels understood, valued and able to thrive.

That’s why raising awareness and encouraging open conversations about menopause is so important to us.

Expert Insight from Dr Manisha

Dr Manisha brings nearly a decade of experience as an NHS GP and has spent several years at Bupa supporting patients through health assessments and menopause care. Now working across our corporate sites, Dr Manisha helps bring greater awareness and understanding of menopause into the workplace.

Understanding Menopause

Menopause usually happens between the ages of 45 and 55, as hormone levels naturally decline. The transition can happen gradually (perimenopause) or more suddenly, for example following surgery.

Everyone’s experience is different. While some people may have few symptoms, others may find it has a noticeable impact on their day-to-day life and work.

Common Symptoms

Symptoms can vary, but may include:

  • Hot flushes and night sweats
  • Fatigue and sleep disruption
  • Changes in mood, including anxiety or low mood
  • Brain fog and difficulty concentrating
  • Headaches or joint pain
  • Changes to skin, hair or weight

For some, menopause can also affect long-term health, including bone and heart health.

Creating a Supportive Workplace

Supporting colleagues through menopause can make a real difference to how people feel at work. At Bupa, we encourage a culture where people feel comfortable to talk openly and access the support they need.

Here’s how we can all help:

  • Build awareness – take time to understand menopause and its impact
  • Encourage open conversations – help remove stigma and normalise discussion
  • Listen and support – recognise that everyone’s experience is different
  • Be inclusive – respect different cultural attitudes and experiences

By creating an environment of understanding and flexibility, we can help people stay confident, supported and able to thrive at work.
