Home Manager / Head of Care

Village Manager

Objective

To plan, manage, direct and monitor the delivery of high quality clinical care to all residents and strive for continuous improvement in the care delivered.

To meet or exceed standards of care delivered to residents, in accordance with the company standards and complying with all regulatory and statutory obligations.

Objectives

  • To maintain the required level of occupancy by promotion of the Village and developing a local marketing plan, including maintaining excellent relationships with local referrers.
  • To become the Registered Manager with CQC for the Care Home.
  • To lead the operation of the Care Home and related services through effective promotion and capitalisation of market opportunities.
  • To be responsible for the efficient day-to-day and long term management of the Care Home. To monitor the standards and ensure the registration is retained.
  • To develop effective working communication with all Heads of Department within the Village.
  • To maintain good morale among all staff through effective leadership, consultation and communication.
  • To attain agreed levels of profitability with the Village Manager and to adhere to annual operating budgets.

Responsibilities

Care and Quality

  • To be responsible for the Registered Care Home, attending statutory inspections by regulatory bodies and ensure that reports are acted upon in accordance with company policy and procedures.
  • To support the Registered Manager of the Domiciliary Care Agency to ensure all clients assessments are undertaken in line with company policy & procedure.
  • To ensure only residents whose needs can be met, and who are suitable for admission, are accepted into the Care Home.
  • To establish and maintain effective communication with all residents within the Care Home, their relatives and friends as customer satisfaction is seen as an important function of the Head of Care.
  • To ensure audits are undertaken promptly and an action plan to address any deficits is developed and acted upon.
  • To deal with complaints following company policy and report to the Village Manager and Director of Operations in accordance with guidelines.
  • To ensure full awareness and understanding by all staff employed within the Care Home of the company’s policies and procedures and risk management protocols.
  • To work with the Head of Hospitality to ensure all food and beverages reach the expected standard of preparation service and quality whilst meeting residents’ nutritional needs.

Estate Management

  • To ensure that the Care Home is maintained in good order in line with expected company standard, reporting any defects to the Village Manager and Maintenance Team.
  • To ensure that the Care Home’s communal and public areas decorative standards and furnishings are maintained in line with expected company standard by reporting any damage or faults to the Village Manager and Maintenance Team.
  • To ensure appropriate levels of security within the Care Home at all times.

Finance and Administration

  • To control all costs by maintaining effective budgetary control, seeking appropriate approval of all variances from the Village Manager.
  • To maximise profit performance of the Care Home to meet or exceed profit targets
  • To prepare weekly staff rostering and supply copy to administration for payroll, as necessary.
  • To ensure all Agency staff used is minimised and pre-authorised, as necessary.
  • To assist the Village Manager in preparing a detailed annual budget fully supported by business plans for income levels, occupancy and operating costs with detailed justification.
  • To assist in the preparation of weekly reports including reporting on variances to the Care Home budget and take appropriate corrective action.
  • To supervise the fee invoicing system by ensuring signed contracts are copied to the Administration department along with any extra services purchased by residents.

 

HR Management

  • To ensure that all registered nursing staff are aware of NMC The Code: Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics for Nurses and Midwives and that NMC registration of all nursing staff employed is up-to-date.
  • To ensure that all staff are appropriately supervised within the Care Home at all times.
  • To be responsible for working within the agreed staffing levels for the Care Home. Any request for increased staffing levels to be submitted to the Village Manager with supporting evidence.
  • To ensure that Care Home staff receive at least six supervisions per year and have a Personal Development Plan.
  • To ensure that staff are employed with due regard for company guidelines and legislation requirements.
  • To recruit adequate levels of staffing, within company guidelines
  • To be responsible for the training and development of staff.
  • To manage staff performance and, where necessary, deal with all disciplinary and grievance procedures, including termination of employment/dismissal.

Sales and Marketing

  • To assist in the local sales and marketing strategies in such a manner as to maximise occupancy and bed rates.
  • To oversee and maintain an effective succession plan for enquiries and reservations in line with the company database, to ensure the continued in-flow of residents to the Care Home.
  • To establish and maintain the high profile and good reputation of the Care Home and the Village within the community.
  • To identify key referral groups and local contacts and build and maintain good working relationships with them.

General

  • To carry out relief Care Management in other Villages, if necessary.
  • To build and maintain good relationships with all members of the Richmond Village group and assist in training new Heads of Care, as required.
  • To maintain a good relationship with all external bodies and meet all regulatory and statutory requirements.
  • To ensure that the Care Home functions within company guidelines and adheres to all Registration requirements laid down by its registering Commission and Social Services Department. To be fully conversant with relevant legislation (e.g. Care Quality Commission (CQS, Environmental Health (EH) & Health & Safety at Work (H&SAW).
  • To carry out all tasks, assessments and investigations outlined in the company’s policies and procedures and to maintain a full awareness of those procedures and all amendments and updates.
  • To carry out other duties as will, from time to time, be directed.
  • To carry out all duties in a safe manner having regard for the health and safety and welfare of self, staff, residents and other persons within Richmond Villages.
  • To appoint a health and safety committee representative.
  • To assist in the review of the local fire procedure and all other policies included in the staff handbook.
  • To attend events and functions to promote Richmond Villages.
  • To attend residents’ social events and maintain regular contact with all Village residents.
  • To liaise with the Activities Organiser to ensure the residents social programme is suitable and extensive
  • To attend regular Heads of Department and other meetings, as appropriate.
  • Maintain detailed and up-to-date knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act (if appropriate) and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS).

This job description is intended to give the Head of Care an appreciation of the role and envisage the range of duties. However, it is not exhaustive and may be reviewed from time to time.

Educational / Professional qualifications / Experience

Essential

  1. RGN or RMN qualified.
  2. Evidence of NMC Registration.
  3. NVQ 4 - Registered Manager award, or equivalent.
  4. At least five years of nursing experience; at least one of which includes care for older people.
  5. Knowledge and ability in managing and supervising staff.
  6. Ability to motivate and work with a team of staff.
  7. Ability to evaluate resident care and act accordingly if untoward changes occur.
  8. Experience of recording accurate care plans.
  9. Experience of supervising drug rounds and maintaining accurate records.
  10. Knowledge of Royal Pharmaceutical Society – The Handling of Medicines in Social Care Guidelines.
  11. Experiencing of establishing relationships with other health professionals; including GPs and Social Workers.
  12. Practical experience of providing high quality care and exceeding expectations.
  13. Ability to demonstrate continuing professional growth and development

 

Desirable

  1. Recognised qualification in Teaching and Assessing in Clinical Practice and/or relevant experience.
  2. Recognised qualification in Promotion of Continence and/or relevant experience.
  3. Recognised qualification in Care of the Dying and/or relevant experience.
  4. Recognised qualification in Care for Elderly People and/or relevant experience.Knowledge of recruiting and training staff
  5. Knowledge of recruiting and training staff.
  6. Experience of co-ordinating staff rotas.
  7. Ability to provide leadership, to motivate and provide guidance to staff.
